Brushing & Flossing with Braces

Your Guide to a Healthy Smile During Treatment

At STABLE Orthodontics, we’re here to help you achieve your healthiest smile! We know that keeping your teeth clean while wearing braces can seem like a challenge, but don’t worry—proper care is simple once you know the right techniques. To make it even easier, we’ve partnered with the AAO to bring you a helpful video that demonstrates how to brush and floss with braces. Now, you can watch it right here during your appointment and refer back to it anytime!

Brushing with Braces

Brushing after every meal is essential to keeping your teeth and gums healthy throughout your treatment. Follow these simple steps for the best results:

  • Use the Right Tools: Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and fluoride toothpaste. A powered toothbrush can give you extra cleaning power!
  • Technique: Brush the outside and inside surfaces of your teeth using small, gentle circular motions. Be sure to angle the toothbrush at 45 degrees to your gum line for the best results.
  • Focus Areas: Pay close attention to areas around your brackets and wires—these spots are where food can get stuck most easily.

Flossing with Braces

Flossing can feel a bit trickier with braces, but it’s just as important! Here’s how to make it easier:

  • Use Special Tools: A floss threader or orthodontic floss will help you get the floss behind the wire and between your teeth.
  • Technique: Gently slide the floss back and forth between your teeth and along the gum line. This will help remove food particles and plaque.
  • Need Extra Help?: If you find flossing difficult or still see food between your teeth, ask us about using a water flosser—it’s a great alternative!
